Abstract
After the establishment of the Turkish Republic, the philosophers of the country in this first period aimed at developing a philosophical terminology in Turkish and published influential works. The decisive character of the following period is its particular focus on encountering other languages and cultures to open a dialogue, and immense work has been done to achieve that aim. This article will examine this period in light of one of its main figures: Önay Sözer and his concept of the “in between”. In his phenomenological works, Sözer interprets the “in between” both as an ontological ground of existence, and as the between of being among others and being in the world. His interpretation is particularly important today for both it points out a creative process in the relations between individuals and between cultures, and it also clearly demonstrates the possibility of these relations.
