The ideology of digital platforms: The right stuff

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterScientificpeer-review

Abstract

In this chapter, we use Blommaert’s insights on ideology and discourse to construct an approach to study digital platforms as ‘ideological apparatuses’. Several authors explicitly mention the ideological nature of platforms (Georgakopoulou et al., 2020; Jones, 2015) but to our knowledge, nobody has developed a systematic approach and theory on how digital media function as ideological apparatuses. In our approach, we look at digital interfaces – including their design features and algorithms – as techno-discursive sites of ideology. Platforms
