Abstract
Criminal activity in Ireland today is widespread. From arson attacks on migrant accommodation centres, to the proliferation of cyberscams, to the domination of the Kinahan drug cartel, crime on the island remains a serious and varied problem. But is Irish criminology keeping abreast of this problem? This research seeks to answer this question through a bibliometric analysis of all research publications in the field of criminology from Universities in the North and South of Ireland between 2000 and 2023. Metadata on published papers within the field of criminology is examined across the horizons of date, author affiliation, topic, key words, journal, journal rank, and citation count, to determine the distribution of effort amongst researchers in Ireland in relation to different crimes. This data is then discussed in light of the current criminal issues facing Ireland presented by media coverage, in political reports, and through the independent presentation of hard data (such as from the courts).
