Abstract
Aspects of cohesion and coherence have been extensively studied from a range of perspectives. We use the term coherence for the representational relationships and cohesion for the textual indications that coherent representation should be built. This paper introduces a model of cohesion and coherence that is based on existing theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistic literature. The model classifies cohesion and coherence in local and global, vocabulary-driven and grammar-driven, each with their own semantic strand (e.g. referential, spatial, additive, temporal and causal). The model is illustrated using a corpus linguistic examples from a novel. Finally, several applications are discussed including reading time and eye tracking experiments, computational models of discourse comprehension and computational readability tools. The paper points out some of the ongoing research in cohesion and coherence in psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, corpus
