Abstract

In this chapter, I first describe the emergence of All Souls’ Day Requiem concerts in the Netherlands. Second, I show how this new ritual repertoire is linked to the traditional All Souls’ Day liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church. Third, I describe two cultural dynamics which have led to the Requiem concert as a new and vicarious All Souls’ Day ritual. Fourth, I conclude this chapter with a reflection on this case study using the concepts of transformation and appropriation.
