    The Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (the Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities) was founded in Haarlem in 1752. The motto became Deo et Patriae, 'for God and country'. Why has this oldest scholarly society of the Netherlands a religious motto?
