What's (not) in the (con)text? Analysing (con)texts in legal and discourse: OJO seminar

The added value of discourse and text analysis in the humanities and the synergy with text analysis in the legal discipline seems almost self-evident (e.g. Hartland 1993). However, its use has also been subject to critical reflection from the start due to hidden theoretical problems and discussions about the nature of the legal discipline itself (e.g. Hartland 1993; Vick 2004). In addition, the use of Critical Discourse Analysis in the legal discipline is only just developing and in some fields hardly applied in practice (e.g. Määttä 2007). Meanwhile, theory and methods of Critical Discourse Analysis and textual analysis are subject to reflection and reconsideration due to new socio-political challenges and the need to explore new public discourses (e.g. Chouliaraki & Fairclough 2010; Krzyzanowski & Forchtner 2016).
