Abstract

The Jan van Eyck Academie invites the public to read Who do I depend-on? On the Changing Circumstances of Artistic Production, an extended essay by Liza Voetman, designed at the Jan van Eyck and published in 2023.

The work discusses such topics as the apparatus of post-academies, artistic production and autonomy, collectivity, represenation, positionality, plurality of worlds, and more. Built on three pillars:

Relevance. From Art Production towards the Production of a Relational Self;
Resonance. From Representation to Reception;
Dependence. From Precarity to Conditions to Live.

The logic of the artwork is to take control and ownership to produce capital out of the power of representation. What happens when we transform art into a place of reception, into a place of offering, instead of a moment of representation, of power over others? – Rolando Vázquez.
