Abstract
In 2017, a proposal for a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was passed in the UN General Assembly. This is the first attempt in history to directly prohibit the threat and use of nuclear weapons by a multilateral treaty. This article offers an overview of the international legal background of the treaty, its essential articles, as well as its key points of contention. The aim is to make understandable the broad criticism against the treaty as well as the passing of the draft regardless.
