Abstract

Are you an Attenberrie, or do you know one? The Attenberrie is regularly mentioned by one of the most popular Instagram accounts about the Dutch city of Tilburg, @tilburgmeme. Though the meaning of the word 'Attenberrie' should be common sense to all Tilburgers according to this Instagram account, no formal definition for the term exists. In this article, we examine a Carnival patch and nine memes about Attenberries and their antagonists to determine which features are emblematic for Attenberries, and which broader cultural contexts are evoked through this term.
